Studio

Halde is a two-person architecture studio in Zürich. We take on a small number of projects at a time, and we stay with each one from first sketch to last detail. Our work is quiet, precise, and built to last — houses and rooms that hold their ground in the city and in the landscape.

The practice grew out of a shared drafting table at ETH and a conviction that good buildings are made by people who draw them personally, spec by spec. We do not scale up; we go deeper. Every commission passes through both our hands at every stage, and every site visit is made by the person who drew the detail.

Approach

Five stages, always in this order. Each ends with drawings you can keep, whether or not the project continues.

  1. 01

    Site

    We walk the parcel at dawn and at dusk, measure the light, note the noises and the neighbours. Nothing is designed before the ground is understood.

  2. 02

    Sketch

    Two or three plans, drawn by hand, argued in red pencil. We test each against the constraints until only one survives without bruises.

  3. 03

    Prototype

    The risky junction gets built at 1:1 — a window reveal, a bench joint, a brick course — before it is ever specified on paper.

  4. 04

    Detail

    Execution drawings down to the screw. Materials chosen for how they age, suppliers chosen for how they answer the phone.

  5. 05

    Site supervision

    Weekly presence on site from excavation to keys. The drawing is a promise; the building is where it is kept or broken.

New build

Full SIA phases 3–5, from pre-design to completion. Typically 12–30 months on site.

Renovation & conversion

Working with existing fabric: surveys, structural liaison, energy retrofit, protected-monument negotiation.

Feasibility studies

A bounded study for a parcel or a question: massing options, volumetry, rough costs. Yours to keep.

Competition entries

Selective — we enter two open competitions a year at most, usually with engineering partners.
